POLIS: A Gathering of People is a private psychotherapy practice that provides assistance to individuals, adolescents, couples, families, and groups with mental health and social concerns.

Anita M. Mendes, LICSW, PLLC opened her practice in Dublin in 2002 and moved to its present location at 145 Grove St. Ext. in Peterborough in December 2005. Her goal is to create a strong client base in the area, while continuing to provide education and consultation services to those who live outside New Hampshire.

POLIS is a generalist private practice for mental health concerns. Anita has strong sub-specialties such as trauma, loss, domestic violence, and sexual assault. She also works with organizations interested in clarifying their values and work practices around diversity and inclusion regarding cultural differences.

Anita teaches people to deal with issues in various ways. Young children with whom she works interact with puppets. She also teaches children to knit "timeline" scarves. This is not only a form of relaxation, but a way for a child to see his or her past - with all its unstructured patterns (marking the difficulties), and structured patterns (marking the good periods). In knitting a timeline scarf, the child learns that mistakes can happen (just like in the knitting process), they learn that choices can be made, and then how to go about repairing the mistake.
